Mixed Race Maggie

Race is always a hot topic, in the political sphere as well as in everyday life. Just the other week, David Letterman got a world exclusive from Barack Obama when he admitted to have been black even before the election!

Now, Channel 4 is launching a series of documentaries on race and one of them, Race: Science's Last Taboo, ask whether there are biological advantages to being mixed race. The whole shebang is marketed by a media campaign showing a white Usain Bolt and a mixed-raced Margaret Thatcher. Oh, the irony... and what's with the right hand, Maggie?

Twenty years on from 20/07/44....No, I mean 12/10/84!

Twenty five years ago today, during the Conservative conference in Brighton, IRA blew up the hotel where the Tories had gathered. Five people died, but the main objective - Margaret Thatcher- survived.

Grand Hotel was left severely damaged, as these pictures show, and Thatcher left the scene in a state of shock. Now, a quarter of a century later, Patrick Magee, the convicted bomber, will attend the Houses of Parliament to promote reconciliation.

All of this makes me think 20th of July, 1944...

MARGARET THATCHER - THREE DECADES ON - A STYLE GUIDE

It was 30 years since Tory King (Queen?) Pin Margaret Thatcher came to power last week. Depending on who you ask, she either ruined this country beyond recognition or saved its failing glory.

For me it's a pretty easy decision. She managed, probably not intentionally though, to bring out the very worst in people and politicians and left Britain gasping for air when she finally got kicked out. She privatised half the country, just about killed of the mining business, their strike and any half-decent attempt by anyone to form unions.

She also kept the old imperialistic flame burning by going to down to the Falklands to keep it British (Yeah, it's just around the corner from the British Isles, surely it can't belong to Argentina, which is thousands of miles away from the Falklands...)

Anyway, we're not here to lambast Thatcher. Things aren't exactly great now either (Thanks Brown and Blair: Expenses, Cash for honours, Iraq, NHS etc).

There is an interesting debate these days on whether Thatcher should get a state funeral when she dies. Others, like comedian Frankie Boyle, are pondering if she even needs to be dead when we bury her...But the point this time around is to have a closer, stylistic, look at the old Iron Lady.

This is perhaps one of the better MT photos; ice cold blue, yet crisp, oufit and a very serious face. Nice pearls. This is Thatcher at her best

Golden Olden. I don't believe in gold clothes, not even for the Iron Lady. And posing underneath your own statue is never a good look, Maggie...

No wonder they kicked her out. What most people don't know is that what her cabinet was mostly annoyed with was not her politics, but this bloody jacket....

and this one.....tweed? How predictable!

Floral was big in 89, apparently. Reagan looks old here, but he was quite a stylish POTUS come to think of it. Shame about the politics though!

In her older days Maggie has gone quite colourful...

ARTS & POLITICS AT ITS BEST...

A week after White Cube's Margaret Tatcher exhibition White Riot closed, the newly refurbished Whitechapel Gallery is showcasing another politically charged piece. A Cubist bust of the former US Secretary of State Colin Powell proudly shakes a phial of Anthrax while balancing, what appears to be a brick, on his right shoulder. The piece is part of the Polish artists Goshka Macuga's The Nature of the Beast exhibition, which decorate the new lower basement gallery.

Inspiration comes from a famous photo of Powell taken during a UN speech, where the cause for the Iraq war dished out to the rest of the world. He waved some Anthrax-looking powder to make a point (of some sort). This was the very moment Powell, a distinguished US General and Gulf War veteran, made a fool of himself. What saved him was being fired by Bush later on (an accomplishment) and then his support for Barack Obama.

The Whitechapel room also includes a replica of Picasso's Guernica, a pianting that hangs in UN's NYC HQ and that was covered when Powell held a wartime press conference in front of it. You see, the painting is an anti war epic, portraying death and despair. Macuga also produced a newspaper explaining the history of Picasso's piece and set up a desk in the gallery that can be booked for round-table talks by anyone - preferable peaceful ones...email guernica@whitechapelgallery.org
